Youre not alone, and fortunately, failing a test in college doesnt necessarily mean youreà going to ruin your GPA. To handle the problem directly, assess the situation, determine what went wrong, and then follow up with your professor to see if any options are available. Failed an Exam in College? Often, when walking out of an exam, youll have a gut feeling of what didnt go well. Immediately sit down and reflect on the experience. First, determine if you understood the material. If you did, then assess your test-taking environment. A noisy room, a temperature that was off, or lack of supplies could impact your scores. Similarly, distractions from your own life or not getting enough sleep or a good breakfast can impact your ability to succeed. On the flip side, if you felt unprepared for the test, break that down. Perhaps youà studiedà the wrong material or did not study enough. Be realistic in your assessment and take stock of what you can do better next time.à à Whatever your difficulties were, make note of them. You can review these notes yourself and determine if reviewing them with your professor or TA might be useful. If you simply made a mistake and were not prepared or fit for taking the test, learn from the experience and use this situation to help you better prepare for the next exam you have to take.à Assess the Damage Failing a test in college can feel like a major disaster, but consider the impact this one exam has on your overall grade. If the exam is one of several throughout the semester or a year-long course, ask yourself how truly damaging this one grade will be for you. Most professors offer a syllabus that outlines the weight of each assessment within the overall grading structure, which can help you determine what your next steps should be. Take the time to understand why you didnt perform well, so review the notes you took after you left the exam room and see if you can find correlations. If you determine that this one exam can make or break your course grade, then schedule a time to meet with your professor or TA.à If youre not sure ifà you failed, or simply feel like you may not have aced it howà you wanted to, simply relax and see what your score actually is before running to your professor. You may have done better than you expected, and you dont want your professor thinking you havent mastered the material before she even reviews it. If you know you completely missed the mark, then its time to talk to your professor. Talk to Your Professor or TA ASAP If youd like to reach out to your professor before you receive your scores, you couldà send an email or leave a voicemail asking to speak. Perhaps you didnt feel like you grasped the material as well as you should have, or you feel that you didnt perform well within the given test format, and youd like to talk. This way, if you actually did okay, you arent telling the professor you thought you failed ââ¬â just that youd like to better master the material or better demonstrate your mastery. And if the test didnt go quite as you had hoped, youve set the stage to perhaps get additional assistance or have a chance to make up the grade. If youre someone who typically understands the material but often doesnt perform well on exams, you should still reach out to your professor or TA. You may wish to make a visit during office hours. Dont be afraid to be honest. You can just start off by saying that you dont think your score is going to reflect your understanding of the material and go from there. Your professor may offer you another option to demonstrate that you do understand what was covered in the exam ââ¬â or they may not. The professors response is their own choice, but at least youve presented your concerns about your performance on the test itself and asked for assistance. Explain Any Special Circumstances Were you suffering from a horrible head cold you thought you could work through? Did something with your family pop up? Did your computer crash during the exam? What the room too cold for you to properly concentrate? Let your professor or TA know that there were special circumstances, but only if there truly were, and only if you think they really had an effect. You want to present a reason why you did poorly, not an excuse. Repeated instances of special circumstances may reflect poorly on youà as well, so carefully assess if the extenuating circumstance was really an issue that affected your grade. The Bottom Line You cant guarantee that your grade can be changed or that your TA will believe your reasons for doing poorly on the test. Unfortunately, your professor isnt always going to give you another shot. Bad scores happen, and when they do, you need to accept that you didnt perform well and move forward. Be prepared, follow the steps above, and have a game plan for what you will do if you do receive a poor score on the test. This way, you can know what you should do instead of simply panicking. The moral of the story is to make sure that you learn from the experience, and prepare yourself to perform better in the future. When comparing these two representations, readers often assume, as a result of the nature of the comedic genre, that Aristophanes portrayal of Socrates is exaggerated and fallacious. On the other hand, Platos account is often taken more seriously as a result of the philosophical genre and the respected reputation Plato has as wildly influential thinker in Western culture. Nevertheless, there are more congruencies between the two representations than one would initially think. Ill discuss some similarities between the two works that gives specific portrayals of the mystery that is Socrates. First and foremost, I must point out the obvious but main difference between these two works; Platos Apology is a philosophical dialogue while Aristophaness Clouds is a comedy. For this reason, we can say that purpose of each is very is different. The first is a work of serious philosophy while the second is a work of entertainment intended to make people laugh, usually by poking fun at people. Second, in terms of characterization, Plato paints a picture of Socrates, as a philosopher to the end, that is, a person who truly lives a life of the pursuit of truth. In addition, Platos view of Socrates is filled with courage, a person who is unafraid of death. In the work, a number of citizens from Athens accuse him of corrupting the youth and not believing in the gods. Of course, Socrates disagrees. In fact, Socrates states that he is doing the city of Athens a great benefit by questioning things. In light of this, Plato portrays Socrates as one who is persecuted unjustly. In Aristophaness Clouds, Socrates is seen as the worst kind of sophist; he is the head of the Thinkery. Aristophanes says that Socrates is the one who can make the weaker argument stronger and the stronger argument weaker. He is not seen as a student of philosophy and truth, but a confused thinker whose feet never touch the ground. In ââ¬Å"Clouds,â⬠by Aristophanes, and ââ¬Å"Apology,â⬠by Plato, Socrates is portrayed in completely different ways. In ââ¬Å"Clouds,â⬠Aristophanes attempts to ridicule Socrates and his followers, the Sophists. In his play, Aristophanes demonstrates that Socrates is corrupting the young men of Athens, and he uses satire to exaggerate many of the teachings brought forth by Socrates. Plato, who was a dedicated follower of Socrates, painted his mentor in a very positive light. Although most of the ââ¬Å"apologyâ⬠is actually a speech given by Socrates, we can assume that Plato had an interest to spin the story in a way that would favor Socrates, and the depiction was radically different from that of Aristophanes. In both works, excellent arguments and points attempt to prove the character and moral integrity of Socrates. In Clouds Aristophanes attempted to ridicule Socrates and his followers with satire, and the work was never meant to be taken as a serious representation of his life. It was, however, a strong political statement, and it influenced and encouraged the public of Athens to sentence Socrates to death. In ââ¬Å"Apology,â⬠Plato writes the speech given by Socrates and we can assume that it is not far from the truth. There is no satire in The Apology and it was intended as a speech to spare a personââ¬â¢s life rather than a play to inform and entertain. Aristophanes describes the ââ¬Å"Thinkery,â⬠which young men join in order to get an alternative education. This ââ¬Å"Thinkeryâ⬠is radically different from a traditional Athenian school. Socrates, who is in charge of the school, encourages his students to look differently upon the world. Socrates suggests that the Gods do not exist, and he teaches his followers to be materialistic and corrupt instead of honest and humble. Strepsiades, who is the main character in the play, decides that he can avoid paying his debts by joining the Sophists and learning how to argue using convincing rhetoric. He is convinced that the teachings are powerful enough to convince anybody of anything, even if his point is completely illogical or dishonest. This argument is called the ââ¬Å"worse argument,â⬠and the play focuses on this speech tactic. In the play, Strepsiades decides that his son can learn the ââ¬Å"worse argumentâ⬠and use it to free Strepsiades of his debts: ââ¬Å"So if you could learn this Worse Argument for me, then all these debts I owe on our account I wouldnââ¬â¢t have to pay, not even a penny! â⬠(Aristophanes I. 116-118). Aristophanes is suggesting, in a comical way, that Socrates would support such immorality, and that he would be willing to teach the ââ¬Å"worse argumentâ⬠solely for this purpose. Socrates spends much of his time thinking of ridiculous theories and playing with words. Most of the topics he mentions are absurd and do not show the sophistication that Socrates claims to strive for. Also, Socrates seems very sure of his arguments despite the fact that he has no real evidence to prove them: ââ¬Å"Clouds fill up with lots of water, then theyââ¬â¢re forced to move about, sagging suddenly with rain, then getting heavier perforce, collide with one another, breaking up and making crashing soundsâ⬠(Aristophanes IV. 375-380). Whenever Strepsiades is confused or disagrees with the words of Socrates, he is quickly attacked and ridiculed. Socrates is portrayed as an arrogant, ââ¬Å"all-knowing,â⬠and rude old man who is turning the younger generation into a bunch of corrupt, selfish, and egotistical men who have no respect for the elderly or for the traditional ways of thinking. Towards the end of the play, Aristophanes illustrates an argument between the ââ¬Å"better argumentâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"worse argument,â⬠and he demonstrates the fact that both of them have very serious flaws. ââ¬Å"Worse argument,â⬠however, is represented as much more powerful and damaging to society: ââ¬Å"Worse argument: ââ¬ËHe can have it; whatever his line, Iââ¬â¢ll shoot him down with phrases fine, concepts novel and though sublimeâ⬠(Aristophanes IX 941-943). Although it is a comedy, Aristophanes still gets the point across about Socrates. After viewing such a play, it is difficult not to see Socrates in a different, more negative light. The overall depiction of Socrates in this play is very self-serving, brash, inconsiderate, ignorant, and morally reprehensible. In The Apology, Plato suggests that the real Socrates is a man very different from the man depicted in Clouds. In The Apology, Socrates stands in front of an Athenian jury after he is charged by Meletus with corrupting the young. Socrates may be facing a sentence of death, and he does his best to persuade the jury that he is not guilty of the accusations against him, and that Meletus accuses him for his own selfish purposes. Socrates also mentions that it is very narrow minded and thoughtless to use ââ¬Å"cloudsâ⬠in any serious decisions. Socrates tells us, ââ¬Å"Socrates is guilty of wrongdoing in that he busies himself studying things in the sky and below the earth; he makes the worse into the stronger argument, and he teaches these same things to others. You have seen this yourself in the comedy of Aristophanes, a Socrates swinging about there, saying he was walking on air and talking a lot of other nonsense about things of which I know nothing at allâ⬠(Plato 23). By explaining that it would be irrational to make such an important decision based on a play, Socrates attempts to disassociate himself with the Socrates of ââ¬Å"clouds. â⬠Socrates gives an excellent speech justifying his actions and attempts to free himself of the chargers against him. He supports his argument with many excellent points and makes himself seem free of any wrongdoing. He speaks about honesty and truth, highlighting it as the most important principle by which he lives by. He tells the jury that if he was in fact guilty of corrupting the young, he would have many more accusers: ââ¬Å"If I corrupt some young men and have corrupted others, then surely some of them who have grown older and realized that I gave them bad advice when they were young should now themselves come up here and accuse me and avenge themselvesâ⬠(Plato 36). Socrates states, however, that the public has been generally pleased with this existence, and that Meletus is the only many who holds a grudge against him. Socrates then attempts to dismiss the accusation of not believing in the gods. In his affidavit, Meletus states that Socrates does not believe in the gods. Socrates disputes this and explains that he does believe in the gods, and that Meletus has used faulty logic to make such an accusation: ââ¬Å"Then since I do believe in spirits, as you admit, if spirits are gods, that is what I mean when I say you speak in riddles and in jest, as you state that I do not believe in gods and then again that I do since I do believe in spiritsâ⬠(Plato 30). In this instance, Socrates uses logic that somewhat reminds us of ââ¬Å"clouds,â⬠but in this case, his ideas are much more consistent and are not based on some sort of ridiculous premise. With this argument, Socrates proves himself a truly wise and intelligent man who can pinpoint a specific issue and think deeply about it in a very sophisticated way. In this representation, Socrates is very much unlike the Socrates character in Clouds. Aristophanes and Plato paint two very different portraits of Socrates. While Aristophanes uses comedy and satire to ridicule Socrates and his teachings, Plato writes The Apology in a way that depicts Socrates as a modest, wise, considerate, and honest hero. Yet the dream that science and technology will free humanity from a life of drudgery continues to remains alive and vibrant, especially among the younger generation. During the 1930s, government officials, trade unionists, economists and usiness leaders were concerned that the result of labour saving devices, rising productivity and efficiency, was worsening the economic plight of every industrial nation. Organised labour wished to share the gains by business, such as increased profits and fewer workers required. They joined together, to combat unemployment by fighting to reducing the working week and improve wages, thus sharing the work and profits amongst the workers and providing more leisure time. By employing more people at fewer hours, labour leaders hoped to reduce unemployment brought on by labor-saving technology, stimulate purchasing power nd revive the economy. And while impressment was a major factor behind the declaration of war by the United States against Britain, there were other significant issues fueling the American march toward war. During the first three decades of American independence there was a general feeling that the British government had very little respect for the young United States. And during the Napoleonic Wars the British government actively sought to meddle with - or completely suppress - American trade with European nations. British arrogance and hostility went so far as to include a deadly attack by the British frigate HMS Leopard upon USS Chesapeake in 1807. The Chesapeake and Leopard affair, which began when the British officer boarded the American ship demanding to seize sailors believed to be deserters from British ships, nearly triggered a war. In late 1807, President Thomas Jefferson, seeking to avoid war while calming public outcry against British insults to American sovereignty, had enacted the Embargo Act of 1807. The law succeeded in avoiding a war with Britain at the time. However, the Embargo Act was generally seen as a failed policy, as turned out to be more harmful to the United States than to its intended targets, Britain and France. When James Madison became president in early 1809 he also sought to avoid war with Britain. But British actions, and a continuing drumbeat for war in the U.S. Congress, seemed destined to make make a new war with Britain unavoidable. The slogan Free Trade and Sailors Rights became a rallying cry. Madison, Congress, and the Move Toward War In early June 1812 President James Madison sent a message to Congress in which he listed complaints about British behavior toward America. Madison raised several issues: ImpressmentContinual harassment of American commerce by British warshipsBritish laws, known as Orders in Council, declaring blockades against American ships bound for European portsAttacks by savages on one of our extensive frontiers believed to be instigated by British troops in Canada The U.S. Congress was being steered at the time by an aggressive faction of young legislators in the House of Representatives known as the War Hawks. Henry Clay, a leader of the War Hawks, was a young member of Congress from Kentucky. Representing the views of Americans living in the West, Clay believed that war with Britain would not only restore American prestige, it would also provide a great benefit in territory. An openly stated goal of the western War Hawks was for the United States to invade and seize Canada. And there was a common, though deeply misguided, belief that it would be easy to achieve. (Once the war began, American actions along the Canadian border tended to be frustrating at best, and Americans never came close to conquering the British territory.) The War of 1812 has often been called Americas Second War for Independence, and that title is appropriate. The young United States government was determined to make Britain respect it. The United States Declared War In June 1812 Following the message sent by President Madison, the United States Senate and the House of Representatives held votes on whether to go to war. The vote in the House of Representatives was held on June 4, 1812, and members voted 79 to 49 to go to war. In the House vote, the members of Congress supporting the war tended to be from the South and West, and those opposed from the Northeast. The U.S. Senate, on June 17, 1812, voted 19 to 13 to go to war. In the Senate the vote also tended to be along regional lines, with most of the votes against the war coming from the Northeast. With so many members of Congress voting against going to war, the War of 1812 was always controversial. The official Declaration of War was signed by President James Madison on June 18, 1812. It read as follows: Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That war be and is hereby declared to exist between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the dependencies thereof, and the United States of America and their territories; and the President of the United States is hereby authorized to use the whole land and naval force of the United States, to carry the same into effect, and to issue private armed vessels of the United States commissions or letters of marque and general reprisal, in such form as he shall think proper, and under the seal of the United States, against the vessels, goods, and effects of the government of the said United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the subjects thereof. American Preparations While the war not declared until late June 1812, the United States government had been actively making preparations for the outbreak of war. In early 1812 the Congress had passed a law actively calling for volunteers for the U.S. Army, which had remained fairly small in the years following independence. American forces under the command of General William Hull had started marching from Ohio toward Fort Detroit (site of present day Detroit, Michigan) in late May 1812. The plan was for Hulls forces to invade Canada, and the proposed invasion force was already in position by the time war was declared. (The invasion proved to be a disaster, however, when Hull surrendered Fort Detroit to the British that summer.) American naval forces had also been prepared for the outbreak of war. And given the slowness of communication, some American ships in the early summer of 1812 attacked British ships whose commanders had not yet learned of the official outbreak of the war. Widespread Opposition to the War The fact that the war was not universally popular proved to be a problem, especially when the early phases of the war, such as the military fiasco at Fort Detroit, went badly. Even before the fighting began, opposition to the war caused major problems. In Baltimore a riot broke out when a vocal anti-war faction was attacked. In other cities speeches against the war were popular. A young lawyer in New England, Daniel Webster, delivered an eloquent address about the war on July 4, 1812. Webster noted that he opposed the war, but as it was now national policy, he was obligated to support it. Though patriotism often ran high, and was boosted by some of the successes of the underdog U.S. Navy, the general feeling in some parts of the country, particularly New England, was that the war had been a bad idea. As it became obvious that the war would be costly and may prove to be impossible to win militarily, the desire to find a peaceful end to the conflict intensified. American officials were eventually dispatched to Europe to work toward a negotiated settlement, the result of which was the Treaty of Ghent. When the war officially ended with the signing of the treaty, there was no clear winner. And, on paper, both sides admitted that things would return to how they had been before hostilities began. However, in a realistic sense, the United States had proven itself to be an independent nation capable of defending itself. And Britain, perhaps from having noticed that the American forces seemed to become stronger as the war went on, made no further attempts to undermine American sovereignty. And one result of the war, which was noted by Albert Gallatin, the secretary of the treasury, was that the controversy around it, and the way the nation came together, had essentially united the nation. There are three main characters in this book; Francis, Larry and Nicole. Throughout this book Cormier gives an insight into how all these characters interlock, with Francisââ¬â¢ mission, to kill Larry LaSalle. In the first chapter of this book Cormier introduces us to the main character of Francis Cassavant, and how he is presented as a hero; this chapter is based entirely on his appearance after a grenade attack from when he fought in the war. Francisââ¬â¢ appearance has obviously changed dramatically as he refers to his face as a ââ¬Ëgargoyleââ¬â¢ and that he has ââ¬Ëno faceââ¬â¢. Francis also refers to himself as the ââ¬Ëhunchback of Notre Dameââ¬â¢ and that he is ugly with ââ¬Ëno ears to speak ofââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëthe absence of my noseââ¬â¢. This suggests that that he has been in a terrible accident and instantly makes you empathise, and feel sorry for him, but as you further progress through the book you see that maybe that Francis isnââ¬â¢t the hero and as innocent as he seems at first glance. To add further detail Cormier describes his nostrils as ââ¬Ëtwo small cavesââ¬â¢. This portrays his face as almost like a monster or a mutant. We can infer from the text that Francis has low self esteem and has little or no confidence in himself and when his doctor says ââ¬Ëdonââ¬â¢t expect anyone to pick you for a danceââ¬â¢ doesnââ¬â¢t really help with the fact when he knows heââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ënot normalââ¬â¢. Francis hides his face with scarves, a hat and a bandage fastened with safety pins, hiding his face tell us that he does not want to be recognised or perhaps to be seen by anyone he knows in Frenchtown. People glance at me in surpriseââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËI donââ¬â¢t blame themââ¬â¢ shows that Francis is obviously repulsed and disgusted by the way he looks but isnââ¬â¢t afraid to say so, and also if he looks terrifying and repulsive, he isnââ¬â¢t going to be thought of as a hero. After in depth of describing the physical description of Francis, Cormier then moves on to the main plot, Francisââ¬â¢ mission to kill Larry LaSalle, dropping in little hints and sending up an ââ¬Ëour fatherââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ë ail Maryââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëglory beââ¬â¢ for Larry LaSalle, and sending up prayers for Nicole Renard, instantly bringing all the three main characters together but still keeping them separate and not knowing why they are interlocked and how everything is more complicated then it seems behind the eyes of Francis, Larry and Nicole, and how Francis and possibly Larry could either be heroes or cowards. Making Francis seem like an innocent war hero is an interesting and unusual move to make because it makes you feel sorry for Francis at the beginning but as the story unfolds you see that there is more than meets the eye about Francis and how his ââ¬Ëheroic statusââ¬â¢ isnââ¬â¢t as heroic as it seems. One of the ways Cormier presents the concept of heroes is in chapter nine, the chapter when Larry LaSalle reveals he is going off to the ââ¬Ëfight the japsââ¬â¢ in the Second World War. So when the news first broke that Japan had bombed Pearl Harbour in an attack, a wave of frenzy and fear washed over America. People had ââ¬Ëpatriotic feverââ¬â¢ meaning that they werenââ¬â¢t just feeling patriotic about their country; it was as though a fever had taken over and had plagued through everyone. That day Larry LaSalle stood before everyone in the wreck centre, his ââ¬Ëmovie-star smile gone replace with grim faced determinationââ¬â¢ he was ready to go and ââ¬Ëfight the japsââ¬â¢ he announced that he was going to war, he had ââ¬Ëanger that we had never seen before flashing in his eyesââ¬â¢. From the quote we realise that Larry is passionate about fighting for his country, but from the way he displays and announces that he is leaving and going to war and when he says ââ¬Ënone of that kidsââ¬â¢ (referring to when the kids clap when he announces heââ¬â¢s going to war) ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m just doing what millions of others are doingââ¬â¢ he almost says it in a way that he wants to be recognised even more as a hero, and he also tries to make it seem as though itââ¬â¢s not important about what heââ¬â¢s doing, but by the way he flaunts it he makes it seem like heââ¬â¢s doing some great and powerful favour for America and the people of Frenchtown. This shows the concept of heroes because as soon as the opportunity comes along to be a hero, Larry will grab it in an instant and makes sure that everyone knows about it and about how itââ¬â¢s making him a hero. This chapter explains the events from Larry returning home, to the episode that happens at the end of the chapter and that is when we come to realise Francisââ¬â¢ hatred for Larry LaSalle. When the crowd are waiting for Larryââ¬â¢s arrival, we see that he is described as ââ¬ËLt. Lawrence LaSalle, US Marines Corps, holder of the silver starââ¬â¢ from this quote we can immediately see that he is being shown as a hero. He is also the star of ââ¬Ënewsreelsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëradiobroadcastsââ¬â¢ making his seem very important; like a vip ââ¬â almost a god as far as the town are concerned. They describe him as ââ¬Ëa bright pied piperââ¬â¢ saying that he can get the towns children to follow him. It shows that he is quite a powerful and a big role model in the children of Frenchtown and maybe not only with children, the adults also seem to love, worship and adore him. In Larryââ¬â¢s actual arrival those there to greet him add the heroic atmosphere. The town goes to greet him at the station, adults, old people and children from the wreck centre are all there to meet this so called hero. When he arrives you instantly remember his ââ¬Ëmovie star smileââ¬â¢ revealing his popularity and confidence. ââ¬ËWe cheeredââ¬â¢ this shows that he is loved and respected by his fellow people and people look up to him as a ââ¬Ëheroââ¬â¢. You could still see ââ¬Ëa touch of Fred Astaire in his walkââ¬â¢ implying that he still is the same old Larry, but now ââ¬Ëlethalââ¬â¢. Him being described as lethal implies that he has changed from coming back from the war; heââ¬â¢s thinner, sleeker. My war heroââ¬â¢ people shout from the crowd. People are proud of him for fighting for their country, they really respect him. ââ¬ËRibbons and medals on his chestââ¬â¢ are a visible representation of him being a hero. Physically the descriptions of Larry show how much he has changed from being a cool dancer to a ââ¬Ëslen der, knife like killing machineââ¬â¢ he has now changed into a ââ¬Ëknife-likeââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëlethalââ¬â¢ with sharper details, the hero that we saw before has now become a ââ¬Ësuperheroââ¬â¢ in the townââ¬â¢s eyes. ââ¬ËYou are our celebrationââ¬â¢ the mayor proclaims to Larry, emphasising Larryââ¬â¢s heroic status. He is now the townââ¬â¢s hero when he is given ââ¬Ëthe silver key to the cityââ¬â¢ people would immediately think that he is of high heroic status is the mayor gives him something so important to the city. When he gives his big speech he says ââ¬Ëwe need to keep the world safe for these young peopleââ¬â¢ saying this he is almost trying to cover up for what he does later. At the celebration, towards the end Larry tries to get Francis to leave the wreck centre, so he can have ââ¬Ëone last danceââ¬â¢ with Nicole, he says that ââ¬Ëthis is importantââ¬â¢ and he manipulates Francis. Just me and her aloneââ¬â¢ makes it feel like something terrible is going to happen. So Francis leaves, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve got to go, you and Larry stay. One last danceââ¬â¢ his words sounding false as though Larry placed them in his mouth. She wants him to ââ¬Ëstay and watchââ¬â¢ but he leaves, to his and Nicoleââ¬â¢s misfortune. When the attack happens, it shows just how unheroic and cowardly both Larry and Francis are. ââ¬ËIn the shadows of the hallwayââ¬â¢ Francis lurks waiting for Nicole to leave the Wreck centre, but then Larry does the most inexplicable, disgusting thing, he sexually assaulted her. A sound that could have been a moan and a rustle of clothingââ¬â¢ even though Francis knew something was going on in there, he still couldnââ¬â¢t pluck the courage to go see if his girlfriend was alright. When she ââ¬Ëstumbles out of the hallwayââ¬â¢ she sees Francis, and he saw ââ¬Ëthe betrayal of her in her eyesââ¬â¢ as she runs away, Francis hears Larry, this now shows how wrong people were about Larry and about how he is not a hero but something of the complete opposite ââ¬Ëwhistling the tune-ââ¬Ëdancing in the darkââ¬â¢ as though he had done nothing wrong, that this was no rmal. Itââ¬â¢s amazing that the heart makes no noise when it cracksââ¬â¢ Francis is truly heartbroken, and it shows just how cowardly Francis and Larry can both be. In chapter 14, we see how much of a hero Francis could be when we finally get to the part where he goes to kill Larry LaSalle, Larry is no longer a hero. When he sees Larry you can see that Larryââ¬â¢s physical appearance has changed drastically as heââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëyellowed with ageââ¬â¢, a bit ââ¬Ëfeeble nowââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëfragile nowââ¬â¢, with ââ¬Ëwhite handsââ¬â¢. Larry is not innocentââ¬â¢ and no longer a hero. Francis explains his unannounced visit, with a gun in his hands. Larry ââ¬Ërises slowlyââ¬â¢ from his chair as Francis begins to question him. ââ¬ËYou were our heroââ¬â¢ Larry was their hero, he did everything for the people of Frenchtown and now his heroic status had just fallen through the roof, ââ¬Ë no more sweet young thingsââ¬â¢ Larry says, saying as though its normal to sexually assault someone whoââ¬â¢s young. Even there heat is sweetââ¬â¢ he says giving Francis even more of a reason to kill him, but he falters when Larry says ââ¬Ëdoes that on sin wipe away all the good things. ââ¬â¢ He falters because heââ¬â¢s probably thinking about what he did for him, with the Table tennis and if it wasnââ¬â¢t for Larry renewing the Wreck Centre, Francis would never had been with Nicole, with all these mixed emotions and feelings Francis walks away. But when Francis walks away ââ¬Ëthe sound of a pistol shot cracks in the airââ¬â¢ Larry LaSalle had shot himself. Cormier presents the idea of heroes in his novel, one by setting it in the time of World War Two, which has lots of potential for heroes because theirs the concept of being a soldier. He also presents the idea of heroes by making two characters seem like heroes at first glance but then stripping them of their heroic status by things that come to haunt them from the past that had never been dealt with.
